A DESTINATION FOR CURATED WINE EXPERIENCES AND GRAZING PLATTERS IN A POST WORLD WAR 1 HOME

NURIOOTPA, OCTOBER 9, 2017 Co-directors of the distinguished, family owned Barossa Valley winery Elderton Wines Cameron and Allister Ashmead have announced the official opening of the new Elderton Wines Cellar Door. The family has restored the original Ashmead homestead on the winery’s Nuriootpa vineyard to showcase its heritage and history and to further provide the warm and inviting Barossa hospitality the region is known for.

The Elderton Wines Cellar Door is a grand example of a Gentleman’s bungalow from the First World War period, it treads the line between grand and homely, while newly renovated gardens by Garden Art Design provide a further sense of sanctuary on the estate. Features of the new cellar door include: a swimming pool and tennis court, lawns for croquet and petanque, indoor and outdoor dining areas to enjoy the new Elderton Small Tastes menu, public and private tasting and dining rooms as well as a small gallery of local South Australian artists.

The new cellar door concept has been driven by co-directors Cameron and Allister Ashmead, as well as co-founder Lorraine Ashmead, who began Elderton Wines with her husband Neil in 1979 when the 72 acres of wines were thrown in “as a bonus” with the purchase of the home.

 

Drink experiences at Elderton Wines Cellar Door

Elderton Wines Cellar Door drink experiences aim to provide an interactive journey for guests. Visitors can taste the current estate range, or choose to further immerse themselves in the wine and history of Elderton with a range of curated food and wine tasting flights and masterclasses.

Choose between an Exceptonal Single Sites Tasting ($10.00 per person – refundable on wine purchase) a Wine & Chocolate Tasting ($20.00 per person) or the Elderton Food and Wine Flight ($30.00 per person) – a demonstration of the delicate interplay between food and wine flavours with five canapés matched with five iconic Elderton Wines.

The Elderton Barossa Shiraz Masterclass ($30.00 per person) explores the diversity of the varietal the Barossa region is renowned for. Journey through the distinctive characteristics of three of Elderton’s estate grown, flag ship wines including the Command Shiraz, one of only 22 wines to hold a Barossa Trust Mark.

The Elderton Elite Tasting ($100.00 per person) and the Making Great Wines ($300.00 per person) experiences allow the opportunity to meet the people behind the wines and enjoy an excusive look at the history and heritage of the winery. The Elite Tasting includes a visit to the 120+ year old Command vineyard and tastings of many of the exception single site wines alongside back vintage examples in the Elderton Private Tasting Room with a selection of locally crafted cheeses.

The Elderton Making Great Wines option is the ultimate winery experience for discerning wine lovers. Hosted by an Ashmead family member, the rare and authentic experience includes barrel tastings, tasting of Elite Single Vineyard Range in the WK Rice “The Duke” Cellar (this is only available to VIP’s and people paying for this experience) and a back vintage wine opened for participants to taste and enjoy in a private tasting lounge.

 

Food at Elderton Wines Cellar Door

Elderton Wines Cellar Door offers a Small Tastes menu daily between 11am and 3pm, in which the winery celebrates some of its favourite local producers with a refined selection of food plates designed to be shared.

A great selection of artisan makers appears in the following menu items: Dom’s Kalamata Olives & smoked almonds; locally cured Atlantic salmon with Japanese mustard dressing; the Barossa platter of smoked small goods, olives, cornichons, Alexandrina Mt Jagged Cheddar, smoked almonds and dolmades; and coffee from Barossa Roasting Co.

Elderton Wines

The Elderton vineyards were originally planted in 1894, and has been owned by the Ashmead Family since 1979. Today, the winery boasts some of Australia’s oldest vines. The three vineyards are run by second generation brothers Cameron and Allister, assisted by winemakers Richard Langford and Julie Ashmead.
