Phillip Island Nature Parks’ high speed EcoBoat will operate daily to take adventurers on either a one hour Express Tour or a 1.5 hour Adventure Tour for the ultimate wildlife experience.

    With over 20 years’ experience, Phillip Island Nature Parks’ ranger guides take visitors out to one of Australia’s largest fur seal colonies, providing an insight into the history and ecology of the seal population. Playful seals surround the boat, ducking their heads in and out of the water, while the underwater camera allows a glimpse into their antics beneath the waves. The expert guides are skilled at spotting Phillip Island’s migrating whales, dolphins, penguins and other seabirds in their natural habitats. Upon return, Express Tour guests stop by the National Surfing Reserve at Cat Bay before heading back to Cowes jetty. Adventure Tour guests extend the thrills by heading to the explosive Nobbies blowhole and beneath the rugged cliffs of Summerland Peninsula before making the return journey.

    LEGO takeover Churchill Island for the Easter Fun Festival

    Churchill Island Heritage Farm will be transformed into a LEGO wonderland for the annual Easter Fun Festival held on 4 – 5 April, 2015. Only a 90 minute drive out of Melbourne and connected to Phillip Island by bridge, Churchill Island will welcome 250,000 LEGO pieces to build the ultimate LEGO playground.

    From 10am – 4pm each day, experts from Inside the Brick will be onsite to host hourly LEGO build sessions, teaching groups of kids how to create LEGO masterpieces.     UK Chef Simon Rogan to host one-off dinner at the Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld

    Accomplished UK Chef Simon Rogan will join the Royal Mail Hotel’s executive chef Robin Wickens for a special one-off collaboration as part of this year’s Melbourne Food & Wine Festival.

    The dinner, which will take place at the historic Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld on Saturday 14 March, will see the two chefs combine their technical know-how to create an eight course degustation that truly embraces locality and takes inspiration from the surrounding Grampians landscape. The menu will feature John Dory with pine oil and pine jus, local Duck, Venison with red mustard shoots and beetroot powder and Yellow Peach with dried meadowsweet and other dishes. Tickets to the dinner cost $295 with all courses matched with local wines from Best’s Great Western who will showcase their award winning Great Western Shiraz and select wines from their historic cellars established in the 1860’s.

    Rogan is recognised as one of the UK’s most accomplished and well respected chefs. His flagship restaurant, L’Enclume, currently holds two Michelin stars and was voted the Best Restaurant in the UK by the Waitrose Good Food Guide 2014. Since opening his first restaurant in 2002, Rogan has gone on to open several other highly successful ventures throughout the UK, including Fera at Claridge’s in London in May 2014.
    Rogan has a strong commitment to fresh, local and seasonal produce. He has his own large farm near Cartmel, Cumbria, where he grows herbs, flowers, fruit and vegetables throughout the year to supply his restaurants. The dinner will offer locally sourced and property grown produce paired with luxury dining, in a culinary tribute to the edible wonders of the Australian landscape.

    Swift Limousine & Cab Sdn Bhd is providing a Nissan Leaf electric car with driver for the hotel’s courtesy car scheme. Running on clean electricity, the car is non-polluting.

    Available exclusively for suite and club room guests, the courtesy car departs daily every two hours between 10am to 4pm, and operates on a first come first served basis. Destinations covered include Jalan Bukit Bintang, a popular shopping strip, Kuala Lumpur Tower, where guests can view the city centre from 421 metres above ground, and Central Market, a well-known heritage site and home to the Centre for Malaysian Culture, Heritage, Art & Craft.     Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is delighted to announce a guest residency by one of Germany’s most celebrated chefs of more than twenty years, Thomas Bühner, from 11 to 16 May 2015.  Bühner is the owner and head chef of La Vie Restaurant in Osnabrück, Germany – the restaurant boasts three Michelin stars and 19 Gault Millau points.

    In 1989, Bühner became Harald Wohlfahrt’s Chef de Partie at the Schwarzwaldstube in Baiersbronn – a turning point in his culinary career and the ideal prerequisite for taking on the position of Head Chef at La Table in Dortmund in 1991. Five years later, he was awarded his first Michelin star, followed by a second in 1998. Gault Millau voted Bühner “Rising Star of the Year” in 2001 and “Chef of the Year” just five years later. In 2009, Bühner became a Relais & Chateaux “Grand Chef”, while La Vie was granted membership of “Les Grandes Tables du Monde” in 2010.

    Bühner inspires with modern, three-dimensional aromatic cuisine: always placing each individual product’s natural flavours in the foreground; a penchant for low-temperature cooking; and the extensive range of his cuisine which he likens to a symphony rather than a collection of disparate courses.

    During his residency at the legendary, 139-year-old Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok’s Lord Jim’s restaurant, Bühner will orchestrate a symphony of innovative and avant-garde five- and seven-course dinner menus that include highlights such as slow cooked salmon served with caviar, fennel, croutons and olive oil; and blue lobster with beetroot, caviar and hazelnut foam. Both menus offer a choice of Australian wagyu with tamarind, banana and pimento; and turbot, broccoli and chickpeas with Joselito ham for the main course.

    Celebrating creativity, culture, lifestyle and landscape, the Festival provides a fantastic platform that attracts quality artists and performances to the region. Taking place across 17 – 19 and 24 – 26 April, the program will incorporate many significant ANZAC Day events.

    Festival chairperson, Deb Bray, explained, “The festival committee is very passionate about providing a structure that is driven from within the community; one that showcases established activities and emerging skill-sets and, importantly, fosters quality events that draw attention to, and celebrate, this magnificent region.”

    Playwright and theatre director Chris Dickins’ Waratah The Musical will be produced in conjunction with FAMDA; accomplished violinist Cath Shugg will again play at the Celia Rosser Gallery in Fish Creek; Melbourne male choir, Low Rez take to the stage at the Fish Creek Hall; and, the Prom Coast Arts Council’s annual The Great Southern Portrait Prize will be exhibited at the Stockyard Gallery in Foster.

    “The festival is a wonderful way to draw people together by providing something for everyone,” said Deb Bray. “From food and wine to sustainability and the environment, musicals and art to tours, sport and workshops.”

    The traditional long lunch in Foster’s main street offers local traders the opportunity to showcase their wares. Many such business are partnering with local artists to turn their shop windows into exhibition space for exciting works of art that will be created utilising or depicting elements particular to the hosting trade. While guests lunching will be entertained by acts including Bec and the Acquaintances and the South Gippsland Brass Band. Adjacent to the long lunch will be The Magic Theatre of Curiosities and Wonder. Visitors will be enchanted by mesmerising circus, magical mime, exquisite puppetry, curious clowns, accordion music, storytelling and film.

    The Royal Mail Hotel and Temple Brewing Company Season’s Harvest Beer Launch

    On Thursday April 30, 2015 the Royal Mail Hotel will celebrate a successful collaboration with Temple Brewing Company at the Brunswick-based brewery’s upstairs event space.

    The two locally minded companies have come together to create a series of seasonal craft beers under the name Season’s Harvest – that will be made by Temple Brewing exclusively for the Royal Mail Hotel using the property’s extensive kitchen garden produce.

    The inaugural brew is the Autumn Lemon Verbena & Pink Peppercorn Wheat Beer – the first in a seasonal line of beers to be brewed for the Royal Mail Hotel in the Temple Brewing Company brewery.

    Royal Mail Hotel Executive Chef Robin Wickens will collaborate with Temple Brewing Chef Sam Hopkinson to create a menu of canapés using the autumnal harvest that complement the beer for the evening’s festivities.

    This event is held just days after the Royal Mail Hotel Producer’s Dinner, in which Robin Wickens will put on a four course meal showcasing his kitchen garden and other locally grown produce in Dunkeld.

    The Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld to host Grampians Producers Dinner

    A selection of the best local produce from the Grampians region will be showcased when Dunkeld’s Royal Mail Hotel hosts a Grampians Producers Dinner on Friday 24 April. The dinner will be the first event to be held in the Royal Mail’s new architecturally-designed event centre, the Mountain View Room. Officially opening in May, the new standalone event space will be an elegant and fitting venue for the Producers Dinner, with state-of-the-art kitchen facilities and floor to ceiling windows offering stunning views out on to surrounding bushland and the Grampians National Park. Enticing event accommodation packages are on offer for guests wishing to stay on and experience the natural wonder of the Grampians.

    The dinner, which is a precursor to the Grampians Grape Escape the following weekend (2-3 May, 2015), has been specially designed by the Royal Mail Hotel’s executive chef Robin Wickens. The four course menu will feature ingredients from the Royal Mail’s own organic kitchen garden along with locally grown produce from the surrounding Grampians region. Olives will be a highlight of each dish on the evening in recognition of the destination’s strength in organic olive production.

    Other highlights of the menu will be locally grown beef, pork, free range eggs and legumes, complemented with fruits, herbs and vegetables from The Royal Mail’s extensive kitchen garden. The Grampians region’s vineyards, which have a history dating back 150 years, will also be showcased with local wines accompanying each dish. Tickets to the dinner cost $120 per person or $1,110 for a table of 10.

    A one-night-only Grampians Producers Dinner accommodation package is available from the Royal Mail Hotel for the night of Friday 24th April, allowing visitors to truly immerse themselves in the natural wonder of the Grampians with luxury overnight accommodation in one of the Hotel’s Deluxe Mountain View rooms or in one of the beautifully restored cottages at the historic Mt Sturgeon Station.

    The following morning guests will be treated to a delicious breakfast followed by a tour of the kitchen garden. One of the Royal Mail’s chefs will join guests and share insights about how the harvested produce influences the menu on a daily basis.     HOSPITALITY DOYENNE RENATA ROBERTS BREATHES NEW LIFE IN TO BRISBANE DINING SCENE

    Hospitality doyenne Renata Roberts continues to breathe life and culture in to the Brisbane dining scene with the March launch of her second restaurant ­ Pizzeria Violetta. The authentic Neapolitan diner is located in Kenmore on Wongabel Street, right next door to the entrepreneur’s sizzling Chinese restaurant, Sichuan Bang Bang.

    Pizzeria Violetta serves authentic Italian, wood fired pizzas in twelve traditional flavours (no pineapple) that are available in-house and to take away. The restaurant also offers delightful salads plus stuzzichini or “little bites”, gelati for dessert and an all-Italian wine and beer list.

    “Brisbane has a strong fascination with multi-cultural cuisine,” said Roberts. “I want the city to be as spoiled and vibrant as Melbourne and Sydney when it comes to dining out.” Roberts has now single-handedly opened two restaurants serving authentic cuisine from two very different parts of the world in Brisbane, in an effort to invigorate the city with exciting new food experiences.

    The venue is bright, simple and refined – named after female courtesan Violetta in Roberts’ favourite opera La Traviata – it can seat up to 20 indoors and 12 outside. It features classic white brick walls decorated with two artworks from celebrated artist Kellie O’Dempsey, polished concrete fixtures and modern Italian furnishings. The hero of the kitchen is a 2.5 tonne Stefano Ferrara custom built wood-fire oven – shipped from Naples specifically for the new eatery.

    The pizzas are “D.O.C” – a quality assurance label for Italian food products which means “controlled destination of origin.” For Roberts, quality and authenticity are crucial aspects of any dining experience. “The success of Bang Bang hinged on staying true to the heritage of Chinese Sichuan cuisine, and at Pizzeria Violetta we have employed that same principle.”

    Roberts has hired an all-Italian staff, including experienced chefs Giordano Pini and Simon Percuoco, who bring with them years of experience working in restaurants throughout Italy; Pini is a pizzaioli reigning from restaurant Pizzeria Regina in Manerbio near Milan and Percuoco is former chef of La Fioravente, a top restaurant in Campania, south of Naples.

    Not only is Pizzeria Violetta a celebration of authentic pizza, it is a celebration of the strength of women and a culmination of the successes Renata Roberts has achieved throughout her career.

    Background:

    Renata Roberts is combining her global and well-rounded experience and knowledge of the hospitality industry with her passion for authentic, provincial food using largely local Australian produce.

    Beginning her career at Qualglino’s in London, Roberts travelled and worked in restaurants in Hong Kong, Canada, the USA and France gaining knowledge of local cuisine and industry practice before returning to Melbourne and Sydney to take up the position of Head of Events and Marketing for local hospitality hero Paul Mathis at Federation Square.

    Roberts then moved to Shanghai in 2008 to work with her ultimate inspiration – Michelle Garnaut – at M and The Glamour Bar on Shanghai’s celebrated Bund. Returning to Brisbane in 2012 even more motivated by Garnaut, a love of the industry and provincial food, Roberts opened Queensland’s first ever authentic provincial Sichuan Chinese restaurant, Sichuan Bang Bang, outside of Sunnybank.

    Creating both Sichuan Bang Bang and Pizzeria Violetta singlehandedly, Roberts has visions of adding her globally grown strengths in authentic hospitality to a largely male dominated industry.

    Hong Kong, 14 May 2015 – The new Spices Restaurant and Bar has opened at award winning Mandarin Oriental, Prague following a redesign of its public areas. Offering authentic regional Asian specialities with a modern twist, the restaurant and bar is supervised by Prague’s most exciting culinary talent, award winning Chef Jiří Štift.

    Inspired by Štift’s extensive travel through Asia, the menu features fragrant dishes like Thai Crab Cakes with Mango mayonnaise, and Grilled Octopus & Tamarind Curry with Noodles. Dishes are served sharing-style, with some prepared next to the table, which allows guests to chat with chefs. A knowledgeable sommelier is on hand to recommend original Asian cocktails, extraordinary teas and carefully selected Czech and international wines to complement the cuisine.

    Spices Bar is a great place for socialising, a luxurious destination in its own right that is relaxed by day and vibrant at night. Contemporary, yet classic, the bar offers an extensive cocktail menu including innovative specialties like Tom Yum Yum and Cilantro, as well as a wide selection of martinis and other classics. Tapas-style Asian dishes, including bento boxes, are served all day, ideal for a light lunch or generous bar snack.

    Spices restaurant is open daily from 6pm to 11pm. The bar closes at 1pm (Friday and Saturday at 2pm).

    Temple Brewing Company takes out five accolades including Best International IPA at last night’s Australian International Beer Awards

    The Temple Brewing Company’s Anytime IPA was awarded Best International Pale Ale at last night’s 2015 Australian International Beer Awards held at Peninsula, Docklands in Melbourne. The Brunswick-based brewery took out the top honour in the IPA category as well as taking on both Australian and international competitors from around the globe to head home with a total of five accolades.

    Temple’s signature Bicycle Beer took Bronze for the Best English Style Summer Ale, with Silver trophies going to its Powerstance Pilsner, New World Order Stout and the Rye Hard IPA for the Best German Style Pilsner, Best Stout and Best IPA (other), respectively. The worldwide awards attracted a record number of applicants from 35 countries.

    “It is a real credit to our team and the hard work everyone has put in,” said Temple Brewing Company Managing Director Nicholas Pang. “For a small brewery in Brunswick to receive this recognition only one and a half years after launching is an amazing and exciting achievement.”

    “At Temple, we are all about brewing great quality Australian beer that’s fresh and balanced. I’m so proud of our Head Brewer Glenn Harrison and the team for creating a selection of Temple beers that are so well received on an international level,” said Pang.

    Gippsland’s Coffee Collective has been chosen as one of Victoria’s highlight events in this year’s Roast Collection, presented by the Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. On the evening of Friday, June 19, The Coffee Collective will host The Whole Hog, serving an indulgent dinner highlighting Gippsland grown, pasture raised pork matched with the award wining wines of the Dirty Three vineyard.

    A wonderful celebration of regional food and wine, The Whole Hog will be a night of roasted exuberance with artisanal pork producer, Amber Creek featuring in a nose to tail three course set menu that heroes the best free range produce Gippsland has to offer. An informal and informative presentation by producer Dan Bright of Amber Creek and Marcus Satchell of Dirty Three Wines will be included in the night’s festivities.

    Owners of The Coffee Collective, James Archibald and Ella Godbold, said they are delighted to have been selected by Roast Collection organisers as a highlight event.

    RACV PARTNER WITH PHILLIP ISLAND NATURE PARKS TO DELIVER MAJOR UPGRADE FOR WORLD FAMOUS PENGUIN PARADE

    RACV and Phillip Island Nature Parks have partnered to construct a new Penguins Plus facility at Australia’s iconic Penguin Parade on Phillip Island. Scheduled to open mid-November 2015, the new Penguins Plus facility will include an underground penguin viewing bunker, enabling visitors to view the little penguins at eye level through one-way glass. New above-ground seating, designed to echo the adjacent sand dune landscape, will also become available accommodating up to 400 people.

    The five-year partnership will see RACV inject $1 million into the project to redevelop the penguin viewing facility into a world-class nature experience for future generations. RACV Director, Alex Downie, said RACV and Phillip Island Nature Parks are deeply committed to providing an important environmental legacy for Victorians and the hundreds of thousands of domestic and international visitors to the penguin attraction annually.

    “This partnership with Phillip Island Nature Parks further reinforces RACV’s commitment to the Gippsland region, in which we have invested heavily through RACV’s Inverloch Resort and our community sponsorships and activities.”

    “Over the past 111 years RACV has grown to become a major contributor to state tourism and recently celebrated a significant milestone – 100 years of providing travel and tourism service to our members; an achievement of which we are extremely proud.”

    Royal Mail Hotel Launches a Sumptuous New High Tea

    The much celebrated Royal Mail Hotel in Victoria’s Grampians, just three hours’ drive from Melbourne, has now launched a mouth-watering traditional High Tea, further enhancing the culinary appeal of its two-hatted Dining Room. The  menu will constantly evolve and be dependent on which produce is thriving in the Royal Mail Hotel’s expansive kitchen garden, all complemented by endless Market Lane coffee and T2 tea.  Duck & watercress and salmon & avocado sandwiches, beef and herb pastries, scones, white chocolate blondies, quince panna cotta and plum and ginger cake are just an example of the style of food one can expect from the new Royal Mail Hotel sumptuous High Tea.

    In keeping with the Royal Mail’s commitment to supporting and collaborating with local and likeminded businesses, a local wrought iron artist – Over Wrought – has been commissioned to design the beautifully rustic high tea stands that reflect the Royal Mail’s natural surrounds. The stands also feature timber inserts created by a local manufacturer who employs people with special needs.
